Small Moment Stories: The Night Owl

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 January 26, 2023, is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

Ten years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE. Below is one of the books from the Multicultural Children’s Book Day! I’m so excited to share this book, The Night Owl, written by Kim C. Lee!

The Awesome Book: Synopsis

The Night Owl, written by Kim C. Lee, is about a little boy who loves to stay up all night. He does not enjoy having a bedtime. When he is sent to his room, he makes use of his time. The time that he is supposed to be sleeping. In his “night owl” time, he jumps on a bed, counts the stars, dances with the shadows, he checks for monsters with his flashlight. He does all the things to not go to sleep. He even peeks in on his mommy. His mommy greets him lovingly and teaches him the importance of resting and taking a break from the day. What an amazing life lesson in the midst of this book!

Anchor Text

This book is a great book that can be used as a bedtime story for families. What a great way to connect with your children through The Night Owl story. For teachers, what a great way to use this as an anchor text for a small-moment story! Most of us can relate to the feeling of not wanting to miss all the action by going to bed. Even us adults! But what a great way to use this story as an anchor for storytelling and a great way to write a small-moment story such as this one.
